Recorded during a six-night stint that took place just two months after the death of AEC bassist Malachi Favors, one might expect a certain mournful tone to permeate these proceedings. Instead, the Art Ensemble was in fiery good form, and, at least judging by the dozen well-recorded tracks that were culled from the performances, was also in high spirits. Although the core members on this recording ' Roscoe Mitchell, Don Moye and Joseph Jarman ' may have an average age of 65, they've not yet lost touch with their revolutionary roots, nor forgotten how to take their Afro-centric compositions into the out-there stratosphere. Newer members Corey Wilkes (trumpet) and Jaribu Shahid (bass) perform more than admirably as the quintet knocks legendary numbers like 'Odwallaâ? completely out of the park. This is a phenomenal showing from a legendary and still vital group.
