As one half of the Fiery Furnaces, a brother/sister duo known for grandly adventurous and experimental music, Matthew Friedberger can be counted on to provide inspiration and instrumentation. His first solo album ' a double-disc affair ' shows him to be a master of the sampler and a gifted, if overworked, songwriter. The first CD, Winter Women, sounds like Harry Nilsson trapped in a cave with only a guitar, a sampler and a bottle of bourbon for accompaniment. Friedberger sings in an undecipherable, stream-of-consciousness mumble bathed in honeyed organs, guitar, childlike piano, sappy string machines and drum samples so dissected and neurotic they threaten to dislodge his pretty, melancholic melodies. Holy Ghost Language School dispenses with the gentle melodies; an ominous tapestry of horror organs, clanking pianos, stumbling beats and general derangement reveal the mad librarian behind this twisted collection.
