Mexico in Mind

Mexico in Mind
Publishing House: Vintage
Rated: NONE
WorkNameSort: Mexico in Mind
Mexico in Mind is the ninth in Vintage's excellent series of nation-oriented anthologies. Like the other unimaginatively titled entries (India in Mind, Cuba in Mind, etc.), this collection is less interested in being a comprehensive representation of the region's literature than it is in presenting a batch of disparate, non-native perceptions of the subject at hand. The result is a small, suitcase-friendly compendium of vivid, place-centric pieces by top-notch authors. Only a small fraction of the entries were penned by actual Mexicans; instead a dizzying array of non-travel writers (Tennessee Williams, John Steinbeck, Anita Desai) are shown to have produced evocative essays that capture the hostile beauty and ineffable personality of Mexico far better than any guidebook writer could hope to.
