Label: I and Ear
Length: LP
Rated: NONE
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Anoint
When an album simultaneously reminds you of the intro to Iron Maiden's 'Phantom of the Operaâ? and one of the sonic explosions that occur inside John Coltrane's 'Jupiterâ? ' and you're not just saying that to be a smartypants ' then you're dealing with an album that's unique indeed. But unique albums are exactly what one has come to expect from the evil guitar genius that is Mick Barr, the singular stringsman behind Orthrelm and various other skull-melting projects. Anoint is presented as one seven-part piece and though Barr's shredding often sounds arbitrary and improvisational, a close listen reveals a surprising amount of compositional complexity and dynamic density. Themes weave in and out, overwhelmingly difficult passages yield to lines of simple elegance, ideas are visited and rapidly discarded, only to be revisited a short time later â?¦ and all of it is done with one multitracked guitar. Destroy your copy of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force now and prepare to completely lose your mind.
