Earthbound

Earthbound
Label: Emperor
Length: LP
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Earthbound
The swooning, breathy acoustica that English singer-songwriter Barker indulges in on Earthbound was created with the writing and production input of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), and if Barker's name rings a bell, it's likely due to her work with Zero 7 and Groove Armada. One would hope that an artist as clearly amenable to sonic unpredictability would create a solo album that reflected a sense of play, but Earthbound sounds like a Heidi Berry album, which is to say that it sounds a lot like a Sandy Denny album. Guthrie's production touch is light, resulting in a spare and spacious beauty that leans heavily on Barker's voice and songs to carry the day; unfortunately, neither are remarkable enough to make Earthbound anything more than a pleasant diversion.
