Music provides the soundtrack to our lives. We have music for dancing, for driving, for sex, for drinking, for tripping and, with Espers, we have music for staring at our lava lamps. This sextet from Philadelphia creates a superb weave of psychedelically shimmering English folk that suggests Sandy Denny'era Fairport Convention mating with the Led Zeppelin of 'No Quarterâ? on a foggy mountaintop while its audience spreads out on the ground of the local planetarium for the IMAX laser show. Male and female voices exchange vocal turns, while an entire arsenal of bizarre instrumentation drives these seven epic tracks. We're talking sleigh bells, gongs, cellos, keyboards, doumbeks and dholaks. Only the band's keen sense of drone keeps these eclectic pieces in place. Play it late at night and avoid operating heavy machinery while under its influence. Pregnant women should check with their doctors before using headphones.
