The prerelease trailer foretold a pleasant throwback to the National Lampoon's Vacation movies; little did we all realize it'd be a Vacation that stupidly expects us to care for its characters. Director Barry Sonnenfeld strikes an awkward balance between mockery and mawkishness, putting Robin Williams at the head of an already fractious household that practically splits apart at the seams when it takes to the open road. For the first 100 miles or so, the mutual contempt is both funny and dead-on: As the perpetually disgusted family daughter, Joanna 'JoJoâ? Levesque has teeth Lindsay Lohan couldn't grow under court order. The concept collapses into mush around the same time papa Bob dazzles some teenage wiggas with a mouthful of B-boy patter that's supposed to reveal him as a pretty cool guy after all ' to us, he's coming off as an even more out-of-touch boor that the one we've already met. Therein hangs the real peril of long family trips: Sooner or later, somebody turns into Robin Williams. (PG) ' SS
