The word "generic" is too specific for Disney's latest slab of stillborn computer animation, which proves that intellectual property is as dead as the Dodo but theatrical distribution is alive and well; otherwise, such a charmless, insincere pastiche of Madagascar, The Lion King and Finding Nemo would have gone straight to video. H-list voice talent like Kiefer Sutherland and Jim Belushi unconvincingly interprets the story of a lion cub who flees a Manhattan zoo to strike out on his own in the Old Country, followed closely by his worried dad. The route to Africa takes poppa Samson and his rescue posse of zany zoo pals through a Times Square that overflows with product placement, including a twice-seen marquee for the stage version of, yes, The Lion King. (Now that's what I call stones.) Amid the recycled situations and characters, only a pair of very Noo Yawk alligators gets genuine laughs – and they're gone in less time than it takes to escort a toddler out of the theater for a wee-wee.
