Roots Manuva dropped the well-received Awfully Deep last year, and even at 51 minutes, it wasn't exhaustive. Alternately Deep is the best of the cuts that didn't make it past the mastering process; some B-sides, some unreleased. A couple of numbers succumb to the curse of the outtake, but this South London native MC of Jamaican heritage never runs out of steam or tight beats, matching his fiery reggae-edged flow with often dancehall-heavy grinds and twists. "Seat Yourself (Miami Mix)," a remix of a post-Awfully track, is one of the dubby, squeal-ridden head-scratchers whose absence from last year's full-length can't possibly be explained. Its fat, bare rumbling loses the persistent buzz of the original cut, but the shrill battle-call synths are still here. When Roots rolls casually over the pummeling Excedrin-headache throb in the "Check It" remix, announcing, "My worth is my word," it begs the question: Any more reels left of this session?
