Mostly minor-key guitar falls against breathy delivery on The Mezzanine, in verses that are lined with modest percussion, various background rumblings or faint synths, as provided by contributor/producer/her well-known uncle Vic Chesnutt. Dusty moments of sheer loveliness find their way into the title track's striking vocal harmonies as well as in each textured narrative line of the more upbeat "Cup on the Counter." The Georgia native showcases a stunning command of her lungs on "Marlene," marking an exploration of guitar-and-vocal intimacy similar to some of Gillian Welch's work. The lo-fi tape reel methods that captured Durrett's mid-'90s compositions for last year's dreary Husk LP have since been upgraded to a studio slot, but that disc's sundown ghostliness still lingers.
