One of the most frustrating aspects of being a record collector is the hoarding of items you deem rare (only to find out a few years later that they were reissued … with bonus tracks!). Once, one of the crown jewels of my collection was a mail-order only, drone-heavy instrumental reworking of The Hope Blister's … Smile's OK album. Lengthy, cyclical tracks, built upon the tiniest slivers of sound, expanded into repetitive, enveloping monsters that went nowhere but sounded really impressive doing it. This was the disc I would play for people who didn't understand my obsession with the sonics of the 4AD label (rather than, of course, the Vaughan Oliver images), and now, thanks to some wiseass at the label, any old schlub on the street can pick it up in a store and be treated to a companion disc (Sideways) that has the tracks reworked by Markus Guentner. Fabulous.
