Even as record titles stay relatively similar within the German DJ/producer camp called Jazzanova, after 10 years of remixes, it's imperative that the six individuals continue to generate new ideas and unconventional choices. On Remixes, the jazz-oriented interpretations of the dreary, country-tinged Calexico number, as well as the Eddie Gale and Free Design covers, stand out. Jazzanova has mastered the remix game, remarkably detracting nothing from the original slate that would be integral to their inspired reworkings. Accordingly, the high-noon swagger is pulled from the sullen original version of Calexico's "Black Heart," but it's swapped with intermittent beats and dub effects for the equally eerie "White Soul Dub" mix. In addition to the array of genres chosen for remix purposes, Jazzanova's decision to include a blank CD-R with Remixes 2002-2005 (you know, for sharing) is indicative of the group's endlessly nontraditional ideology.
