I had wanted to be the only critic not to mention that Derailed is the first release from the newly formed Weinstein Co., but it's impossible to ignore what an unimpressive film has received the honor. Yet another adultery-driven Adrian Lyne knockoff (with a whiff of early-'90s stinker Malice thrown in), the movie concerns an ad man (Clive Owen) who cheats on his wife with a hot married banker (Jennifer Aniston), only to fall into an abyss of thievery, rape and blackmail. Betraying his beautiful spouse for no good reason also means jeopardizing the needs of his seriously diabetic daughter, yet the film still submits Owen's Charles Schine as a figure of sympathy – even as he repeatedly refuses to come clean about any of his whopping lapses in judgment. Don't expect to find escapist relief in the big narrative "twist," which is easy to spot coming as the commuter train on which our paramours meet.
