Although Coconut FM starts off leisurely enough – with the romantic tropical sway of Gladys' "No Te Vayas Corazon" – soon enough it's ass-deep in the divergent sounds of the Latin hip-hop and funk underground. Dishing up high-velocity reggaeton, aciton and, um, "cumbia lunática" tracks, Señor Coconut shows why he's the funkiest (and most sonically adventurous) German on the planet. The Brazilian funk tracks – from the likes of Bonde Neurose and Os Carrascos – are brain-fryingly fun, with their fractured beats, red-line synths and hoarse-throat vocals. But whether from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Puerto Rico or Panama, everything here is thick with infectious rhythms and aggressive funkiness you're unlikely to be hearing on your local corporate Latin station any time soon.
