Review - Saggin' the Bargins

Artist: The Band of the Name

Posted on Thu, Apr 28, 2005 at 4:00 AM

This six-song CD is only 26 minutes long, but that's certainly not to say that The Band of the Name is short on ideas. Quite to the contrary, Saggin' piles notes upon changes upon riffs upon melodies in a manner that's as playful as it is puzzling. Anyone who's seen this local art-rock aggregation knows that BOTN thrives on complexity and challenge, but that they also hold the concept of musical fun in high regard. This disc is a fine example of that, in that the conceptual density and math-rock arpeggios are evenly tempered by bursts of pure visceral energy that make the whole enterprise a hoot to listen to.
