Review - The Golden Republic

Artist: The Golden Republic

Posted on Thu, Feb 10, 2005 at 4:00 AM

If the guys in Interpol weren't so up to their eyeballs in detached New York cool and were willing to hang out with Lenny Kravitz for an afternoon, they might end up sounding a little like The Golden Republic. Although there's a healthy dose of riffy sunshine spread across these 11 tracks, TGR are from Missouri, not California, a geographical anomaly that may contribute to the meaty, khaki-clad blandness they produce. Occasionally hitting on the same frenetic sway that marks so many new indie rock acts, but absolutely devoid of the prescribed aversion to tuned-up melodies and retrograde rockisms, TGR end up sounding like Pitchfork's answer to The Darkness. That, I'm afraid, is not an entirely good thing.
