From samba to bossa nova and beyond, Brazil is always contributing to the world's higher musical sense. Everyone knows Jobim, Gilberto and Caetano Veloso, but lesser-known in the states yet equally important is the work of poet, musician, playwright and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes. Co-writer of such bossa nova classics as "Insensatez," "Garota de Ipanema," "Chega de Saudade" and "Amor em Paz," de Moraes is a pivotal figure in Brazilian music and inspires to this day. Paula Morelenbaum treats the master's work with respect and ingenuity on this disc, her velvety voice and alluring delivery lending the songs a dreamlike, ethereal spin that is irresistible. Co-producing with Bossacucanova, Celso Fonseca, Leo Gandelman and Andy Pinto, Morelenbaum matches surreal samples with acoustic instruments and contemporary dance production. But the modern treatments never overshadow these wonderful songs, which flow via Morelenbaum's rich, luscious voice and are aided, no doubt, by the ghosts of those long-gone Brazilian masters.
