An opening blast of head-beaming techno beats, hymnal organ, heavenly chimes and seagulls signals something different than the usual Massive Attack record. Composed by remaining MA member Robert Del Naja (aka 3D) with Neil Davidge, Danny the Dog uses a full band spliced and diced to meet Luc Besson's circuitous soundtrack needs. So instead of glistening productions with female vocals, we get a multitextural soundtrack of strings, beats and samples immersed in that dusky MA charisma. A languid groove sways "Polaroid Girl," radiant piano tones grace the bittersweet "Sam," backward samples and hysterical strings inform "One Thought at a Time," and lush orchestrations meld into squeamish Aphex Twin gurgles on "Red Light Means Go." Though Danny the Dog lacks the humid slow-motion weight of Mezzanine or 100th Window, the album's exhilarating wash of sounds, weathered and coaxed into mysteriously iridescent form, could only be Massive Attack.
