Review - A John Waters Christmas

Artist: Various Artists

I swore to myself that I wouldn't do the obligatory Christmas CD roundup this year. I did it last year and it was boring. Yet, when this collection of Christmas music compiled by John Waters showed up in the mail, I had no choice but to write about it. Why? Because the super-traditionalist/mondo bizarro taste that defines Waters means that A John Waters Christmas is the best kind of Christmas music. He corrals old-school obscurities like the soulful "I Wish You a Merry Christmas" (by Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva) with out-and-out juvenile hilarity ("Here Comes Fatty Claus"). The Chipmunks are here, as is Tiny Tim, and though this assemblage doesn't quite rise to the level of a Dr. Demento set (or, needless to say, A Song-Poem Christmas), it's still a perfectly ridiculous addition to your freak-Grandma-out Christmas canon.
