Review - You've Been Spiked

Artist: Chris Joss

Posted on Thu, Dec 16, 2004 at 4:00 AM

When does hipster turn into hick-ster? French producer/DJ Chris Joss has boiled down every '70s detective-movie cliché into an easily digestible soundtrack to flashy Huggy-Bear living on You've Been Spiked. Playing all the drums, keyboards, bass and computer-modeled instruments, Joss never winks when a full-on stare will do. Such galloping funk flames as "Early Morning Wanderings" and "The Man With a Suitcase" dig deep in the Lalo Schifrin/Jerry Goldsmith repertoire, but with an air of confidence and clever theft that would sound phony in less accomplished hands. Joss has apparently not only studied classic soundtracks like Watermelon Man, Shaft, Superfly and any number of blaxploitation epics, he's also done a lot of slumming with KC and the Sunshine Band. So while nothing on You've Been Spiked is in any way original, it is a stone gas for a groovy weekend getaway.
