Review - The Dwarves Must Die

Artist: Dwarves

Posted on Thu, Oct 7, 2004 at 4:00 AM

Beautiful naked chicks in a shower? Hot. A naked dwarf man in the same shower? Not so hot. But that simultaneous feeling of arousal and revulsion has always been a hallmark of Dwarves' records (and their covers), and the Michael Lavine-shot cover of The Dwarves Must Die continues the trend. Sadly, boredom is the primary reaction the musical contents will evoke, as the sputtering frenzy of early Dwarves' albums has been replaced with a punk formalism that hits all the right notes, but just does it in a way that a thousand other bands have done before. What used to make this band so fascinating was their furious unpredictability. Though the inclusion of a hip-hop flavored cut ("Demented") is certainly unpredictable, it's also totally dull. Dwarves used to be a band to be scared of, now they're just another boring punk band with a stale sense of humor.
