Review - Backstroke

Artist: Matthew Dear

Backstroke
Label: Spectral Sound/Ghostly International
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Backstroke

With these eight songs, Dear makes good on his impressive Leave Luck to Heaven album with a disc that's simultaneously darker and poppier. House-music scraps are still Dear's foundation, but the tweaked, atmospheric grinding of "And in the Night" and the New Order-with-Ian Curtis electro-dirge of "Tide" are inspirationally genreless.
