Review - The Eye of Every Strom

Artist: Neurosis

Creative progress is almost always good, and San Francisco's Neurosis have, in their two decades of music-making, become one of the most interesting bands to watch progress. Starting life as hardcore anarchists and mutating through various phases of heaviness, ultraheaviness and desolate bleakness, the band (not to mention its various extracurricular incarnations) has never stood still. The Eye of Every Storm continues their evolutionary slog, and like most things that are new and different, it takes some getting used to. Injecting new elements of featherweight melody and a touch of orchestrated psychedelia that's disconcerting and disorienting, Steve Von Till and crew continue their race to the bottom of musical despair by fusing these elements to a chassis of thudding brutality. Heavy without simple viscerality and dark without hopeless moaning, Every Storm paints a picture of an eye-bleeding emotional apocalypse that's as beautiful to hear as it is scary to contemplate.
