Review - The Art of Leaving

Artist: Pleasant Grove

Posted on Thu, Jun 3, 2004 at 4:00 AM

Twang and gut-bucket blues are rooted in Texas, but that's hardly the territory mined by this group. Ethereal is more like it, from the haunting guitars on "Impossible" to the hopeless life of "The Plaque at 16ft," a stark number with nothing but an acoustic guitar and desperation where the "lonesome road to nowhere just got longer." These 10 numbers run the musical gamut from starkness to lush instrumentation, but the desperate theme is ubiquitous. The Art of Leaving may be a lyrically appropriate title, but this release also indicates that Pleasant Grove may be here to stay.
