Review - Taking Things Apart

Artist: Decomposure

Posted on Thu, Jun 3, 2004 at 4:00 AM

Taking Things Apart
Label: Unschooled
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Taking Things Apart

The lesson that Decomposure (aka Caleb Mueller) imparts with Taking Things Apart is simple: everyday sounds – a pen scratching paper, Scrabble pieces striking a surface, a malfunctioning sound card – can be transformed, with computers and an ear for melody and imagination, into enthralling electronica. Each track is titled according to its primary source; in the liner notes, Mueller offers treatises on his songwriting processes to combat what he rightly calls the "anonymous, blank, mechanical, robotic personas" of IDM luminaries like Autechre and Pole. And he puts his music where his mouth is, from the wood-click, tap-dance whirligigging of "Matches" to the staticky ozone drones and rapid-fire vocal skipping of "Speech," which steeps the president's September 2001 "Bring our enemies to justice or justice to our enemies" address in moody not-quite-glitchcore.
