Review - Like You Like an Arsonist

Artist: Paris, Texas

Alternating between rock luminosity and worn-out pop-punk fodder, PTX treads a comfortable path between accessibility and excessiveness. While the luminous parts of Arsonist are particularly orgasmic ("Better Off"), the rest is old hat. There are some ear-musing At the Drive-In riffs present, as well as a nostalgic expression of the days when emo wasn't a bad word and gritty guitar anthems ruled the day. This record is hardly groundbreaking, but it threatens to vie for the attention of both pop princesses and Ritalin-addled punkers in a music industry where that appeal is par for success. PTX's attractive anthemic sensibilities thankfully rough up a sound that power pop tarnished long ago. (Paris, Texas performs with A Static Lullaby, The Bled, Lonely Kings and Classic Case at The Social on Monday, May 3.)
