Review - All Night Long

Artist: Layo & Bushwacka

All Night Long
Label: The End
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: All Night Long

Although Layo & Bushwacka's two studio albums have been quite nice, it's their marathon club sessions as DJs that have given the two the vaunted reputation they enjoy, and "All Night Long" is the first time in the duo's decade-long partnership they've bothered to commit that sound to disc. Or discs, as it were: This double-disc set stretches well past the two-hour line, hitting a dizzying number of sonic milestones along the way. Everything -- from Depeche Mode and Newcleus to 4 Hero, The Detroit Experiment and Fast Eddie -- shows up and somehow, miraculously, it all works. L&B succeed by being smart and stupid at the same time; any DJ can make thumping house or retro-electro-hop or Sly & The Family Stone sound good in a mix. But how many, in 2004, are able to guilelessly dig up a Dread Flimstone track and make it sound modern, cool, interesting and maybe even slightly innovative? Exactly two.
