Review - Odyssey: The Definitive Collection

Artist: Vangelis

It's hard to figure out what's stranger about this compilation. Is it being reminded that same Vangelis behind "Chariots of Fire" is the Vangelis that made the astoundingly creepy "L'Apocalypse des Animaux" album? Or is it that the liner notes are by ex-groupie Cherry Vanilla? Whatever the case is, "Odyssey" may well be a stunning revelation if your preconception of Vangelis is synthesized movie scores. Although his cinematic treatments make up the bulk of this compilation, bits from albums like "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" (by Jon & Vangelis) and "Opera Sauvage" show that, when not constrained by visual accompaniment, Vangelis is prone to get a bit strange. (Although **Animaux** is weird, it also happens to be a soundtrack.) Digital blippery coupled with synthetic washes and a strong undercurrent of post-disco electro-fascination makes all of it interesting.
