Review - Kill Sound Before Sound Kills You

Artist: Kid 606

When the skull-busting hyperdrive of "Ecstasy Motherfucker" closes out with a sample of "I am a cliché," you just know that Kid 606 was chuckling at the joke, because, after all, the joke is funny. Because that's all "Ecstasy Motherfucker" and "The Illness" and "Buckle Up" and the rest of the dozen tracks here are: clich?s. But, as with all Kid 606 adventures, the clichés are muddled, hacked, reconfigured and unleashed at blindingly digitized speeds, making all this sound, somehow, fresh. Relentlessly funny and alarmingly self-aware, Kid 606 has been attempting to unshackle IDM from its more pretentious leanings for some time now, and he appears to have done a good job. The prevailing trend (see Schematic) is for laptronicists to come barreling out of the gate, caring nought for "context" or "postmodernism," preferring instead to just let the booty bounce in fractured flashes. Thus, "Kill Sound" is a recklessly good time, as full of humor as it is arch, ghetto pretense (dancehall, World Class Wreckin' Cru-style electro-hop and distorto-bling all show up). It'll brutalize your stereo -- and your brain -- but that's what this stuff is best at. That, and clichés.
