Disney's latest attempt to hold the line for traditional animation is a formulaic enough effort, but it still comes through with the moralistic goods when it needs to. Hints of "The Lion King," "Bambi" and even "Ice Age" permeate the story of a primitive tribesman who kills a bear in anger, then finds himself turned into one to learn the error of his ways. Some inutterably generic songs by Phil Collins are about the worst we have to contend with as this pedestrian yet heartfelt film proceeds toward an emotional climax that proves there is punch without Pixar.
