Review - All Hits at the House of Blues

Artist: Raphael Saadiq

Posted on Thu, Oct 16, 2003 at 4:00 AM

The fact that Raphael Saadiq was dropped from his label, Universal, days before he received five Grammy nominations for his funky "Instant Vintage" album confirms that most music executives don't know much about music. But music is what Saadiq knows, with production and writing credits that read like a who's who of the out-the-black-box music scene. Undeterred by his label woes, he returns with a banging live album on his own imprint, Pookie, that's another slap-in-your-face confirmation of his musicianship. "All Hits" basks in the inventive sound that Tony! Toni! Tone! championed, and surprises abound. From the hard-hitting rock riff introduced alongside D'Angelo's falsetto in "Be Here" and a bad-ass performance from Joi (aka Star Kitty) to the monumental TTT reunion of that night, this is the best of Saadiq, and the only thing you'll regret is that you weren't there in person.
