You don't come to an album by an ex-Virgin Steele guitarist looking for new directions in heavy music. You come looking for a denim-clad trip down metal memory lane. If your expectations are thus aligned, "Under A Savage Sky" is a satisfying, if decidedly unadventurous, journey through B-grade mid-'80s mystical riffage. From its "vintage" cover art and tracks like the instrumental "Anthem For the Nations" and chugging, Rainbow-esque "The Flame That Never Dies" to the fact that vocalist Shmoulik Avigal is a dead ringer for Ronnie James Dio, it's clear that Starr and his Guardians are tending a metal flame that's long since been abandoned. More power to 'em.
