Review - Millennium Collection

Artist: Peter Frampton

Plug in this disc, punch any number and sit back and name that tune. This retrospective of Frampton's solo career is filled with the instantly recognizable riffs that for a while dominated the '70s. "Show Me the Way," "I'm In You" and "Do You Feel Like We Do" are still standard classic rock fare, and because of that, it could be said that they have stood the test of time. When viewed collectively, however, you have to stop and ask: Was this the precursor to the power-pop schlock that followed? The lone attempt to break out of that formula, at least on this release, comes in the form of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)," but that attempt only serves to reveal Frampton's vocal limitations. No one can deny his prowess on the guitar and there's plenty of evidence of that. His solo success will forever overshadow his work with Humble Pie in the late '60s and early '70s, and it's unfortunate that that is not sampled here. Even a little piece of the "pie" would have livened up this collection of the familiar.
