Review - Exploding Girls

Artist: Gene Loves Jezebel

Not sure why this is happening. Some 20 years after their lipstick relevance, proto-goth ramblers Gene Loves Jezebel reappear in a Jim Morrison haze of consciousness streams, swaggering on about "2 Hungry Women" and "Downhill Both Ways?" Whatever. It's not the Gene Loves Jezebel you might have discovered Manic Panic with either, seeing as acrimony divided twins Michael and Jay Aston in a hostile courtroom many years ago, leaving Mike with the obtuse, fairly unpromising moniker. Jealous? I don't think so. Throughout, as always, there seems to be one note from which Aston is operating, occasionally segueing into some shamanistic whine about some "Mary Magdalene girl" while cautiously flipping his hair. The introduction of minor trip-hop tendencies and occasional acoustic strums does little to save this affair from its desperate Sunset Strip overdose. Aping Ian McCulloch has rarely sounded so shrill, leaving Exploding Girls (supposedly a concept album about women Mike's hated, loved and slept with ... woo!) substantially beneath anything that anyone would ever, er, desire.
