Review - I Am A Foreigner

Artist: Rapoon

The astonishingly prolific Robin Storey (d.b.a. Rapoon) never ceases to impress with his increasingly diverse vocabulary of ambient sounds. As the first of three CDs he's scheduled to release this year (and about his 40th release over the past decade), the inspiration for "Foreigner" was the simplest thing: a language-lesson tape his wife left playing in the kitchen that spookily announced the titular phrase. From that nugget of inspiration, Storey crafted nine distinct pieces that sonically describe the pleasant sense of "depaysment" one feels when exploring new territories. Echo-drenched, but swelteringly claustrophobic, the none-too-delicate pan-ethnic soundscapes here are filled with the same anxious disorientation that comes with being a "foreigner."
