Any band that pulls a half-page out of Céline's classic "Journey to the End of the Night" is probably too smart for their own good. And though Buffalo's Elad Love Affair are indeed an incredibly smart band, they don't let their brains get in the way of their bluster. Careening swells of angular attack emerge from a decidedly post-punk skill-set, but the wailing and gnashing of teeth that comes from vocalist Nola Ranallo ensures a feminine intensity that puts the entire affair over the edge. Wrapping a hip-thrusting violence around their melodic angst, Elad Love Affair recast the driving edginess of their music with a brainy aloofness that makes it hard to resist.
