Alan Moore's original graphic novel had a genius concept: Bring some of the greatest characters in adventure literature together to form a 19th century superhero squad. The remaining shreds of that premise are all that carry this dumbed-down adaptation, in which aging hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery) joins forces with the likes of Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah) and Dr. Jekyll (Jason Flemyng) to stop a madman bent on wreaking war among the nations. Moore's dark vision has predictably been diluted for mass consumption, but that doesn't begin to explain why the disjointed storyline is so full of holes. The FX, meanwhile, are too inconsistent to take up the slack. Connery reportedly dominated the troubled production, even "sitting in" on the editing process. Wonder why he didn't notice the handful of phenomenally unflattering shots that make him look too decrepit for words.
