Review - New World Worder

Artist: Stephan Smith

Posted on Thu, Jun 19, 2003 at 4:00 AM

It's certainly appropriate New York "troubadour" Stephan Smith would, by titling his album thusly, want you to pay attention to his words. He's certainly a deft lyrical leftie and wastes none of the lines in these dozen songs on self-absorbed introspection or paeans to lost love. Aligning himself with the foot-stompin' revolution of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger (who guests on the bonus track, "The Bell"), the songs here are sparse and Smith's acoustic guitar playing is just about superfluous when he's "singing" about "Merchants of Lies" and "perpetuatin' exploitatin' people tribes and nations."
