Review - You Forgot It In People

Artist: Broken Social Scene

Posted on Thu, Jun 12, 2003 at 4:00 AM

A song title like "I'm Still Your Fag" should be enough to get attention, but when a lyric like "I swore I drank your piss that night to see if I could live" bubbles up from the lachrymose swamp of said song, you quickly realize that you're listening to something special. Toronto's Broken Social Scene wend their way through a variety of stylistic shifts on "You Forgot It in People," but the album is a consistently moody one, albeit one of inconsistent moods. Thickly constructed soundscapes are created, and whether poppy ("Stars and Sons") or pathos-drenched ("Shampoo Suicide"), there's an inescapable sense of fractured perfectionism. Ideas are tossed in willy-nilly by "guests," while the core members of BSS gamely configure them into a dense (and largely sad) brand of future-pop. It's tricky stuff, but quite rewarding.
