Review - Invent Modest Fires

Artist: Ghost Cauldron

Posted on Thu, May 22, 2003 at 4:00 AM

Though not "horrorcore" along the lines of Gravediggaz, this collaboration between DJ Kaos and producer/keyboardist CE.EL is definitely about creating some spooky-ass tracks. Whether it's the "Twin Peaks" obviousness of "Fire Walk With Me" or the "Halloween" theme music running through "Only at Night," "Invent Modest Fires" is definitely "not" a party record. Dark and creepy electro dominates, but not in a silly goth fashion. Instead, hip-hop beat constructions and off-the-wall sampling are drafted to serve in minor-key dirges that are as unsettling as they are groove-heavy.
