Review - 39 Minutes of Bliss (in an Otherwise Meaningless World)

Artist: Caesars

Any recording that starts out with the lyrics, "I wanna smoke crack/ until you come back" should be able to live up to a title as ridiculously self-important as "39 Minutes of Bliss." It's too bad that this Swedish quartet doesn't deliver on either. Caesars is easily defined as "one more Swedish garage band," and their Farfisa-driven rawness and simplistic melodic style echoes proper Nuggets-style '60s garage rock. Were this album released on a more knowing label such as Get Hip, the stylistic aping would be more tolerable. As it is, Astralwerks has signed Caesars after relentless U.K. hype positioned the group as the next big thing (yawn). But "39 Minutes of Bliss" is just enjoyable, and ultimately quite anonymous, whether due to overpolished, Oasis-inspired hooks or blatant cops of music that were done much better 30 years ago. The album's winning moments actually only tally up to about 15 minutes of distraction.
