This remake of the 1971 thriller soars on the seriously brilliant idea of casting walking freak show Crispin Glover as a young man who trains an army of hungry rodents to wreak havoc on his enemies. All of the actor's patented behavioral tics are in copious supply (all hail the return of the George McFly finger-point), yet there's infinitely more to his sublime, sensitive portrayal of pre-social pathology than the simple urge to caricature. Director Glen Morgan (writer/producer of "Final Destination" and "The X-Files" TV series) emphasizes Hitchcockian mood over exxxtreme gore, keeping his camera tight on a lead character whose makeup and wardrobe suggest an Edward Gorey drawing brought to vivid life. How cool.
