Review - Bavarian Fruit Bread

Artist: Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions

There is just something about the throaty indifference in Hope Sandoval's voice that is capable of lulling me into a state that rivals substance-induced sedation. The melodic Mazzy Star maestro and ex-My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm O'Ciosoig have collaborated to produce Sandoval's first solo effort, "Bavarian Fruit Bread." Simply put, the album is like Mazzy Star on opiates instead of her usual psychedelics.

Understated and undulating, subtle guitars and the occasional accompaniment of cellos, harmonicas and bells only accentuate the main attraction -- Sandoval's voice. The intimacy she provides through her vocal abilities is subdued and stunning, almost as if she has invited her listeners to a private performance on her pillow.

Make sure you're comfortable and sitting down when you listen to this album; it may be a while before you are able to get back up again.
