Review - The Invisible Band

Artist: Travis

Posted on Thu, Aug 30, 2001 at 4:00 AM

Last year, Brit-rockers Travis took the (rest of the) world by multiplatinum storm with the sing-songy everyman-ism of their second record, "The Man Who," thanks to its irresistible anthemic pity party, "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" This year, Fran Healy and company return with an even more subversively accessible collection of pastoral strum-alongs, set to furrow the middle-brow of their unsuspecting fanbase.

First single, "Sing," is as gorgeously inspirational as it is dismissive, throwing its hands up at a life turning bad to say, "nothing, nothing, nothing ... unless you sing, sing, sing." Elsewhere, "Side" draws even more apathy with its by-negative-numbers philosophy of "There is no wrong/there is no right/the circle only has one side," all delivered with the soft stroke of a compassionate friend. "The Invisible Band" is full of hidden shadowing. Listen closer to feel worse.
