Review - Don't Forget to Remember

Artist: Matt Mitchelson

Posted on Thu, Aug 16, 2001 at 4:00 AM

There was a time when singer/songwriters like Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Willis Alan Ramsey lived, to some degree, the songs they wrote. The poetry they produced was that of reflection and experience. Fortunately, there are a few people out there, laboring mostly in obscurity, who are still making music armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar, a sense of humor and their experiences. Chicago's Matt Mitchelson falls into this category.

On "Don't Forget to Remember," Mitchelson manages to come across as an amalgamation of Prine, Todd Snider and Chuck Brodsky. The lyrics of "Doing Alright," "Ruby" and "Anne Was Atlas" have a way, like Prine's, of rooting themselves in the tangible but having their meanings lie in the abstract spaces between. The standout track, for me, was undoubtedly "Talkin' Milk and Honey Blues," a bit of social satire that sounds like the song Snider was just about to write.
