Tribute records always attempt to be great, groundbreaking, artist-driven undertakings, but the quality of the end product always falls way short of the desired goal. So if you don't have high expectations, Stoned Immaculate isn't such a disappointment, just a terribly uneven affair. Like The Doors' original compositions, it's a "renewed" and/or "reimagined" pastiche of cheesy jazz meets overblown keyboard junkets, with some slick guitar leads.
Credibility drops to serious lows when pop sensations Smash Mouth attack "Peace Frog." Then there is Train's execrable version of "Light My Fire" and Days of the New's bloated take on "L.A. Woman." There are a few bright spots: Stone Temple Pilots' cover of "Break on Through," Ian Astbury's reading of "Touch Me," The Cult's "Wild Child" and a surprisingly lucid read of "Riders on the Storm" by Creed.
