Raves for Puerto Rican outpost

Posted on Thu, Jan 4, 2001 at 4:00 AM

I can't count the number of times while driving that I've heard people shouting "mofongo" at me, and I took offense. Now I know they were merely enthusiastically recommending Mr. Mofongo, the Puerto Rican restaurant just east of State Road 436 at 5643 E. Colonial Drive (407-482-0150).

"Mofongo," for those still harboring doubts, is the national side dish of Puerto Rico, sort of the tropical answer to fries, made of mashed green plantains and a whole lot of garlic. Mr. Mofongo serves mofongo plain or with roast pork, beef, shrimp, octopus or a combination, and take it from me, those friendly drivers knew what they were talking about.

Mr. Mofongo, who used to park a truck on Frontage Drive for hungry travelers, also serves pressed sandwiches and has a terrific bakery; get a box of golf-ball-sized macaroons for your next party. Mofongo. Say it soft and it's almost like praying.
