Review - Blue Suitcase

Artist: Paul Sprawl

Posted on Tue, Aug 8, 2000 at 4:00 AM

There is a beautiful, no-nonsense feel to every song that comes sliding off guitarist and songwriter Paul Sprawl's first album, "Blue Suitcase." His simple lyrics can pound you with a large dose of introspection if you pay attention, or they can seamlessly glide past your ears if you'd rather have the guitar strings feel out the story for you. Either way, you're in for a good batch of twangy emotion.

Songs like "Good Times" make great blues/folk fusion. "In the office tower/ I hear the sound of papers shuffling/ whispers in confidence/ where did all the good times go," Sprawl moans, warning about corporate drain.

Not all of his songs are so weighty, with most tracks providing musical slices of life. Genius doesn't reside in every song on "Blue Suitcase," but there's definitely plenty here to think about, including the pleasing feel of Sprawl's raspy voice. And its more likely than not you'll have a good "hmmm ..." session before the CD is done.
