Review - Secret Love

Artist: Sunyatta

Sunyatta's "Secret Love" represents a valiant project that waxes smooth with squeaky-clean production but drifts lifelessly away when two studied and seasoned talents fall short of their potential. Produced, written and performed by vocalist Sharon Rae and keyboardist/vocalist Shelly Davis, Sunyatta is a potpourri of jazz, blues, pop and folk that hints at this duo's capabilities.

Rae undermines her powerful vocal range with a restrained delivery. She gives herself away, however, at the end of "My Baby Is Crazy," proof that she is sandbagging. Shelly is competent on keys, but comes off sterile at bridges and solo breaks, where emotion is needed. And the pianist should give up vocals -- or at least in the presence of the likes of Rae.
