Review - Precious

Artist: Precious

Something in Precious guitarist/vocalist Steve Garron's propulsive lyrical abandon frees the soul and shatters standard local music expectations. On the trio's self-titled debut, Garron strings together absurd (yet oddly resonant) rhymes -- "Automatic suck and suture, medical sardine can of the future," anyone? -- that achieve the odd transcendence of similarly cerebral sociopaths, like Smoking Popes, Jets to Brazil, even Our Lady Peace. (Hear marked similarities in Raine Maida's minor-chord falsetto.)

But the dental-floss wiring of this home-brewed, thrash-and-burn, pop-infected rock project easily eschews its influences by being so gloriously at the front of its hypertensive threshold.

Precious' signature sex send-up "Bi-Curious George" strikes its pendulous ambiguity right on the head, swinging the hottest verse this side of Beck: "Know the guy that I'm out a lookin' for/ nice car, leisure suit, muffin butt." Beat that.
